I’ve been feeling kind of blue lately; both physically and mentally. And to be frank, it’s been showing in my work. Usually one of two things happens to my work those states for me: 1) I do no work at all and use any medium of entertainment possible to distract myself from things I’m trying not to think about, or 2) my designs are dark, grimy and angry (which has it’s aesthetic place, but more often than not, end up being throw aways).

An interesting thing happened in this case, the design helped organize my mind. The process of solving this puzzle, of building and fitting the pieces of together to complete this picture not only changed my mental state, but turned what was about to be an over thought, over designed, busy piece into something I’m personally ecstatic about!

I love the sense of scale, they use of highlight and shadow and the composition. Not to mention I just love silhouettes, wide open fields and night time skies. This piece is almost like a fever dream and a dedication to summer. A dedication to those warm nights when the moon seems as huge as ever, and engulfs the land with it’s eerie mystical light as you feel a cool breeze break the humidity and roll lightly over the hairs on your arms. Like the light of the moon was manifesting physically to cool you off. Those are gorgeous nights.

But that’s how this piece ended up, not who it began. My inspiration for this was the thought that I never liked chasing my dreams, because it meant I was a follower, not a leader. So I’ll be my dreams, I’ll *live* my dreams, because I was never good at following!

Been trying to get this design out of my head all month. Finally I decided to go ahead and finish it. And while I’m not completely satified with it — which is partially why I’m still playing with it — I’m quite sure I over designed the hell out of it! Ha ha. Sad thing is, i could have made it WAY more crazy. But I just didn’t have the patience to complete all the components to my satisfaction. Really the only part I’m completely happy with is the main graphic element, the dancer.

So all that said, peep the steez, I still like it, just not as much as I could. Maybe one day I’ll come back and actually give it a production level finish. If not, whatever, I’m just glad to get it out of my head, and looks good enough for me to smile and obviously blog about it. So enjoy! =Sterling P. Sanders

Awesome video from company called Sixty40, a motion design and animation firm from Aussie-land. All of their work has an air of the bizarre to it, but this one is something special. Absolutely killing this video for Warp Records. Harmonic 313, the artist of the song, combines a super hype, fire electro soundtrack with emcees Phat Kat and Elzhi, for what results in one of the most energetic and enjoyable new tracks from people I’ve never heard of.

The song is about “Battlestar” is about:

”Battlestar” is the story of a deceivingly sized binocular spaceship coming to earth and decimating an unsuspecting b-boy in order to conquer the universe. (view full text here)

From concept to execution, it’s impressive. And you know what? They just made me an insta fan of the company, the producer, and the emcees. Ahh, I love freshness! =$

Loving the warm color palette lately. This piece was inspired by another design from Italian Carnival. Once saw a great anime about it, can’t remeber the name exactly, but I digress. This piece was more a fun test of skills than anything else. Orignally intended to be a asymetrically placed t-shirt idead, but now I think it’d look much better on a large poster print.

I’m starting to notice that freedom is creeping into my designs. It seems that things turn out better when I just go with what I feel, more so than trying to force perfection. That may have been the first time I’ve ever truely felt that imperfections made it beautiful. I’ll just have to remember not to take that thought too far! So maybe only in moderation! Ha ha… =$

You can’t see it, but I can

A current personal project I’m working on, insipired by a beautiful friend of mine. It’s still a work in progress, she’s going to have to do some more modeling for me to get it just right.

As of now, the body position is a bit off, shadows are incorrect, background needs more texture, but the piece is so much fun! So many elements at play. But I figured I’d show you a deconstructed and constructed image just to show you how much more effort goes into those things that look so “simple” to you. I just find it strange how much artists will often cover up some of the most detailed work they do. But as I always like to say: “Making difficult things look easy is a mark of greatness”. =$

Also Testing new Gallery feature, lets see how it works. So many of these wordpress features I used to do manually, guess I should have learned to use automated tools? I think training on Frontpage so long made me inherrentlydistrust WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editors!

Photo Edits Hi-Lo

So, I’ve been playing with photo-edits recently, illustrating some, photographic stylizing some, adding elements to others, using live trace and all sorts of things. This was a concept I came up with earlier today, one meant to be a wall paper, the other just to look pretty, examples below, let me know what you think. Which one is better, more detail or more style? =$
